On April 20th, CCA Math Team students took part in the San Diego Honors Math Contest (SDHMC), a local math contest held by UCSD. Every year, hundreds of students from 20+ high schools participate in SDHMC. The contest is split into two 90-minute parts: the 25 multiple-choice questions and the 4 proof problems. Congratulations to the following students in placing in the top 25!
Last month, CCA students took their final CAML of the school year.
Congratulations to Evan Luo, Stephen Zhu, Aidan Bai, Ryan Bai (11th), and Kai Yi for perfecting this CAML!
Furthermore, congratulations to Ryan Bai, Alex Backues, Aidan Bai, Ethan Song, Ryan Wu, Evan Luo, and Stephen Zhu for being among the highest cumulative scorers in all of California.
Finally, we’d like to thank all who participated in this year’s CAML. We couldn’t have placed 2nd in the state without the help of all of you. Thank you!
After school on November 8th and November 14th, high school students around the world competed in the 2023 American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 10/12 A and 10/12 B by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The AMC 10 contained problems designed at a 10th-grade level while the respective AMC 12 was at a 12th-grade level. The contest was made up of 25 increasingly difficult multiple-choice problems to be solved in 75 minutes. Unlike most competitions, there was a guessing penalty—a correct response was worth 6 points, a blank response was worth 1.5 points, and an incorrect response was worth 0 points—and the maximum possible score was 150.
CCA had 125 students participate in the 10/12 A tests and 121 students in the 10/12 B tests, both breaking our previous school records! Among these, the top 3 scores on each of the four tests were part of our school’s team for that contest. Congrats to the following team members:

Scoring in around the top 2.5% of all participants in either of the AMC 10 tests or around the top 5% of all participants in either of the AMC 12 tests (scoring above 103.5 on 10A, 85.5 on 12A, 105 on 10B, or 88.5 on 12B) qualifies an individual for the 2024 American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), which will take place on Thursday, February 1st.
CCA had 52 AIME qualifiers this year, our highest ever yet! The following students qualified for the 2024 AIME:

Finally, we would like to congratulate Bryan Guo for perfecting the AMC 12 B test! Only a few students each year are able to achieve this feat.
A huge congratulations again to all of CCA’s amazing mathletes!! For more information about the American Mathematics Competition, see here. Full competition results will be posted here, along with a variety of statistics for those interested.
The first round of the 2023–2024 California Math League High School Contest happened on Tuesday, October 17th, with 30 minutes to solve 6 mathematics problems of various types.
Congratulations to Ethan Song, Alex Backues, Ryan Wu, Yiwen Liang, Advait Choksi, and Ryan Bai (11) for getting perfect scores on our first contest!
We will hold our first Raven Contest in E101! You will compete in teams of 4 to complete 8 problems in 30 minutes, and there will be prizes! The top teams will be announced after the contest.
Olympiad Group
Olympiad Group is a part of the CCA Math Team that meets for around 1.5 hours after school. You can join the mailing list here. OlyGroup will be meeting today after school in E105.
Tomorrow, we will be holding an Estimathon! It’s a mixture of fun math and trivia (though many people just rely on pure guesswork), and you’ll be attempting ten problems in teams of up to four. There will be prizes for the top two teams, which includes a lot of sugary good stuff!
Olympiad Group
Olympiad Group is a part of CCA Math Team that meets for around 1.5 hours after school. You can join the mailing list here. OlyGroup will be meeting today after school in E105, with a lecture on “Parabolic Triangles” from Australian import Michelle Liang!
AMCs will be held at CCA for CCA students on Wednesday, November 8th, 2023 (10A & 12A) and Tuesday, November 14th, 2023 (10B & 12B). To learn more about what the AMC tests are, visit here.
Students are allowed to take both the A and the B and can choose either the 10 and/or the 12 (you could take the 10A and 12B, for example) given that they are eligible (11th and 12th graders are NOT eligible for the AMC 10, but 9th and 10th graders are eligible for the AMC 12). However, students can only take one test from the 10A / 12A tests and only one from the 10B / 12B tests.
Signup forms are found here. Additionally, we are requesting that students pay $5 for each AMC test that they take. The payment form can be found at https://bit.ly/ccamtpay-2023 and should be filled out and given to either one of the officers or Mr. Shay (E101). Late signups after September 15th incur an additional late fee of $5.
Hi everyone! Thank you for joining us in our first meeting of the year. Our slide is linked here. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot us an email at mathteam.cca@gmail.com or message us on our Discord server!
